Read the Wealth Watch report about how JD Vance is cashing in during the Trump administration.
| Vice President JD Vance was picked by Donald Trump to replace his former running mate, Mike Pence, because the latter would not help him steal the 2020 election and Vance has demonstrated unending fealty to him β at least lately. In 2016, Vance voted third party, called Trump "unfit" and privately warned he could be "America's Hitler." In 2020, he wrote that Trump had "thoroughly failed to deliver." But he is all-in on MAGA now. In the lead-up to and the aftermath of the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol, Vance said he would have demanded multiple slates of electors in 2020 rather than certify the election immediately. He suggested Trump fire midlevel bureaucrats and ignore Supreme Court rulings that stood in his way and has called many January 6 defendants "political prisoners." He also has extreme right-wing views on policy: Vance has backed abortion bans without rape or incest exceptions, saying the circumstances of such pregnancies are "inconvenient." He has said he would like abortion to be illegal nationally and supported a federal 15-week ban. Writing under a pseudonym, Vance endorsed Paul Ryan's plan, which would have turned Medicare into a voucher program. He also complained that Republicans wouldn't embrace "fiscal sanity" by cutting Social Security and Medicare. Vance said he didn't really care what happened to Ukraine and voted repeatedly against aid. He supported ending the war even if it meant Ukraine giving up territory, and opposed Ukraine joining NATO. He has attacked Americans without children as "cat ladies" and "sociopaths" and fundraised off those smears. He argued that parents should pay lower taxes and get more voting power than people without kids. Vance's career began in Silicon Valley, where he worked for the billionaire Republican Peter Thiel. Vance sat on the board of and promoted the company AppHarvest, which broke its pledge of good jobs for Appalachian workers board and promoted the company. Vance held between $116,003 and $315,000 of the comapny's stock before it filed for bankruptcy in July 2023, laid off local employees and replaced them with migrant contract labor. |
