Trump’s Department Of Labor Released A Proposed Rule That Would Allow Restaurants To Take The Tips That Servers Earned And Distribute How They See Fit. According to the Economic Policy Institute, “On December 5, the Trump administration took its first major step toward allowing employers to legally pocket the tips earned by the workers they employ. The Department of Labor (DOL) released a proposed rule that would allow restaurants to take the tips that servers earn and share them with untipped employees such as cooks and dishwashers. But, crucially, the rule doesn’t actually require that employers distribute ‘pooled’ tips to workers. Under the administration’s proposed rule, as long as tipped workers earn minimum wage, employers could legally pocket those tips.” [Economic Policy Institute, 12/12/17]
Critics Of The Department Of Labor’s Rule Pointed Out That Trump Was A Restaurant Owner So He Would Benefit From The Rule Change. According to the Business Insider, “The Department of Labor has proposed a new regulation that would allow businesses to collect tips earned by their employees. […] Critics also note that President Donald Trump is himself a restaurant owner and would personally benefit from the rule change.” [Business Insider, 1/22/18]
